Tips in case of an earthquake

If you are in the house
• Stay calm.
• Take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture (table, desk), kneel and hold on to one of its legs.
• If there is no sturdy furniture, kneel in the middle of the room, make yourself as small as possible and protect your head and neck with your arms. Move away from large glass surfaces (windows, glass partitions) or furniture and objects that can injure you.
• Do not try to leave the house.
• Do not go out on the balcony.
• Move away from windows and outside walls.
• Stay where you are until the shaking stops.
• If you are outdoors, move away from areas beneath buildings, telephone or electrical wires.

WHAT TO DO AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE
If you are in the house
• Prepare for possible aftershocks.
• Carefully check yourself and those around you for possible injuries.
• If anyone is seriously injured, do not move them.
• Evacuate the building using the stairs (do not use the elevator), after switching off electricity, gas and water.
• Go to an open and safe place.
• Follow the instructions of the authorities and do not pay attention to rumors.
• Do not unnecessarily use your car
• Do not enter your home if you see damage, cut cables, gas leak or gas.

If you are in a low-lying coastal area
• Although not all earthquakes cause tsunamis, stay alert.
• Move away from the sea and head to inland areas with higher altitude. A small tsunami at one point on the coast can turn into a large tsunami a kilometer away.
• Stay away from the coast. A tsunami does not consist of a single wave but of a series of waves, so return only after the authorities have informed you that there is no risk.
• Do not approach the coast to watch an upcoming tsunami. When you see it, it may be too late to avoid it.
