AR, Location Awareness, Wearables, BIM: Improvement of the Facility Management process

Improve your facility management process with AR, Location Awareness, Wearables and BIM.

BIM offers great value to the design and construction industry for extended periods of time. Recently, some important technological developments have emerged with BIM, which will increase the application of BIM in global industries. In order to bring more value to owners, BIM needs to be integrated into the natural workflow and maintenance.

Here’s the importance of AR, Location Awareness, Wearables and BIM. If all these technologies are properly developed and combined, the information in BIM can be fully optimized.

Watch the video below to focus on how this technology can be connected to a natural workflow.

Location Awareness

On-site awareness is considered to be the leading next-generation digital technology that facilitates this type of workflow as it opens new horizons in BIM / VDC development. Location awareness belongs to devices that must be applied to locate their location dynamically or passively.

Some useful technologies such as iBeacon and other location awareness technologies are inexpensive and can be used in everyday activities.

It is applied with GPS and related systems for cities and roads (macro). This technique can not perform well on a smaller scale (micro), such as inside a building.

Get the maximum speed when location awareness is more accurately accessible (<10cm in x, y, z) to add value. As part of a facility management process, an installation operator, builder or designer goes through a building with his tablet, BIM will find the actual position x, y, z inside the building and will automatically navigate the model. This system will then provide access to BIM “information” in order to collect relevant information about the room, equipment or appliance while walking around the building.

Augmented Reality

After resolving the issue of microstructure, the model can be combined with the associated information (the “I” in BIM) in real-world coordinates. The following procedure should take advantage of augmented reality to overlay 3D model and information. AR will connect the virtual with the realism that provides a normal workflow.

Wearables

If AR is paired with everyday gadgets such as eyeglasses (google glasses or Daqri hard hat), window screens, computers and even contact lenses, it can have a big impact on the construction workplace. These types of technologies can be used in pre-design, design, construction, construction and operation / maintenance. Recently, several advanced technologies that can be worn on the market appear, such as google glass, smart watches, etc. These technologies can make virtual design, construction and BIM more accessible on site. BIM data can be effectively applied to non-BIM professionals with a single click and comprehensible design.
