How to keep Indoor Plants Healthy
It is a fact that plants offer a multitude of positive effects on humans. According to research, indoor plants can contribute positively to human health, reducing stress, increasing productivity and improving attention. They have the ability to clean the atmosphere, while enriching the space with oxygen.
But in order for them to offer us their beneficial properties, we must also reciprocate by taking care of them so that they are healthy. Here are some easy tips to help you keep your houseplants healthy.
Light
All plants need light to grow and survive. Similarly, indoor plants can thrive if placed in well-lit areas, but avoiding direct sunlight (causing burns to the foliage).
Soil and Planter
Choosing the right planter in combination with an automatic watering can and well-drained soil contributes greatly to the development of a strong and healthy root system, which will give life to the rest of the plant.
Water
Not much, but not much. Excessive watering is the most common problem we face when caring for indoor plants.
Always check the soil before watering. If we see that it is still wet we do not water. In addition, if our planter is a pot (it has no holes in its base), we keep in mind that the water we throw stays at its base and “chokes” the roots of the plant. If we have an automatic watering system, we fill it with water until the indicator is in the middle between minimum and maximum. Then, as the days go by, we check the level and when it drops to a minimum we can follow the same procedure. The three most common signs of over-watering are:
1.Brown leaf tips
2. Yellowing of the lower leaves
3. Soft and dark brown spots on the leaves
Τemperature
All plants need light to grow and survive. Similarly, indoor plants can thrive if placed in well-lit areas, but avoiding direct sunlight (causing burns to the foliage).
Fertilization
In order for indoor plants to stay healthy, they need regular fertilization to enrich the soil with the necessary nutrients for the plants. Add water-soluble fertilizer 2 times a month, in the spring and autumn months. In winter and summer, when the temperatures are too high or too low, we avoid lubrication.
Cleaning
The cleaning of the foliage and the removal of dry leaves and branches contribute to both the aesthetics and the health of a plant. A plant with clean foliage photosynthesizes better and is much more beautiful. In addition, when there are no dry branches and leaves, the plant does not expend nutrients on them and utilizes them for the healthy parts of the plant.
